                             FROM THE PASTOR

Here is the third, and last, of our General Rules.  We have contemplated what it means to do no harm and what it means to do good.  This week, the general rule focuses on the things we must do in order to continue to grow in our faith.  Once again, in John Wesley’s own words.

It is expected of all who desire to continue in these societies that they should continue to evidence their desire of salvation,

Thirdly: By attending upon all the ordinances of God; such are:

  • The public worship of God.
  • The ministry of the Word, either read or expounded.
  • The Supper of the Lord.
  • Family and private prayer.
  • Searching the Scriptures.
  • Fasting or abstinence.

These are the General Rules of our societies; all of which we are taught of God to observe, even in his written Word, which is the only rule, and the sufficient rule, both of our faith and practice. And all these we know his Spirit writes on truly awakened hearts.

It is my prayer that God truly awaken our hearts so that his Spirit may write his words therein.  See you in church.

WALK IN FAITH 2008 - GIFTS

Last week Morgan Cantey called me (at the last minute as he usually does) and browbeat me into writing about “Gifts” for this issue of “The Bearings”.  After a several day recovery period from this unsolicited intrusion on my precious time I began to seriously ponder the topic with all the reverence and humility it deserves.

Without question I have been the beneficiary of many wonderful gifts from a multitude of givers that, when I utilized them properly, have resulted in exponential bounty of benefits to my personal, professional and spiritual life.  My parents’ constant ranting and raving on the importance of education has allowed me to enjoy a very fulfilling medical career.  My mother’s insistence on my attendance at Sunday school and church planted a seed of belief that at times smoldered and more recently sparked and affected many different aspects of my life.  The gift of my wife and children has been an indescribable blessing that I could not do justice to in a thousand articles like this.

Thus it would seem I have received far more than I have ever given or will able to give to others.  But wait a minute; can I know this for certain?  The ultimate fruits of our gifts to others are seldom apparent to us in the near or long term.  Each of us has the same potential opportunity regardless of our means to have our gifts to the church, regardless of how modest in amount they might seem, result in an untold return in enhancing the spiritual lives of other.  Taken together with the gifts of our fellow church members their potential for good is potentially staggering.  Our monetary gifts and our gifts of our time and talents to the church may permit Sunday School to help define, the future spiritual lives of our children.  Gifts supporting Wednesday Night Live or the Leisure Time Club can support the older adult who may feel alone or has a crisis of faith.  The money we give to pay off our building loan provides a structure in which all the good works of our parishioners begin and are nurtured...  The spiritual return on our investment is unknowable and incalculable.  If souls are saved in the name of Christ it is an eternal dividend.

I will close with a secular example in which a small investment resulted in an unforeseeable benefit.  The famous Spanish classical guitarist Andres Segovia recounted this story to an interviewer near the end of his 93 years.  Segovia was a struggling young guitarist in Madrid in 1912.  He desperately needed a high quality guitar if he was to move into the higher ranks of classical performers.  He was in the guitar shop of Juan Ramirez who then (and now) produced the finest guitars in the world.  Ramirez listened to Segovia play several guitars and was impressed with his talent.  Segovia wished to rent a guitar for upcoming performances but had little money and certainly could not afford to buy one.  Ramirez chose the best guitar he had made recently and handed it to Segovia and said “The guitar is yours young man, go and take it into the world”.   Segovia, overcome with emotion said ... “Thank you sir, this is one of those gifts that has a value but no price.”   For the next 70 years Segovia toured the world and gave the guitar its rightful place in the music world and taught thousands of younger guitarists. Imagine the effects our gifts can potentially have at Bearden United Methodist Church.

                           FAMILY PROMISE (IHN)

This Sunday, November 4, our church will begin a week of providing shelter and food to 2-4 families without homes. We are still in need of overnight hosts (male & female overnight host for Thursday & Friday, & Saturday male overnight host 8:30 p.m. – 7 a.m.   If you need to leave earlier than 7 o’clock, arrangements can be made); evening hosts 5:30- 8:30 p.m. (Thursday, Friday, Saturday); provide a portion of the evening meal (Monday - Saturday); Laundry Team - pick up laundry on Sunday, Nov. 11 and deliver back to the church before the next host week; help with Take Down on Sunday, Nov 11 from 7-8 a.m.  It is also very helpful to the families to have volun-teers who will play with the children and/or help with homework during the evening. If you can serve during our host week, please call Charla Sherbakoff at 450-5078. For help with a meal, contact Nina McPherson at 691-0148.

DO YOU HAVE A SEWING MACHINE?

Can you sew?  Operate scissors?  Cut and paste?  Your help is needed for the costume committee for the Night in Bethlehem scheduled for Dec. 16.  During the next few weeks we will need to clothe shepherds, villagers, a Roman soldier or two, and other citizens of Bethlehem.  If you can help, call Judy McKenzie at 368-2062.
