WALK IN FAITH 2008 -- SERVICE

For over 20 years I've had the opportunity to serve in many different ministries at Bearden.  I'd like to say my service has always been a result of prayerful thought, but that's not true.  There have been times I wanted to serve so that I could be with my own kids.  I've served because of a feeling of guilt or loyalty to a friend.  And let's not forget the times I've served to get away from my own kids!

As I continue my run, leap, walk and sometimes crawl in faith, I've had many feelings about service.  Where am I now?  I  WANT TO SERVE GOD!  I praise God that I can serve!  I feel passionate about serving the Lord!  Hebrews 10:24 says, "In response to all he has done for us, let us outdo each other in being helpful and kind to each other and in doing good."

I encourage you to try this approach to service and see what happens.  You will be blessed.

                        In His Service,

                        Nancy Mitchell

A thought from my Mamaw-- Man is like a watch:

what he says doesn't amount to anything,

if he never moves.

                      Family Promise (IHN)

Please take time to check the Family Promise

work board posted in the Atrium. We particularly

need male overnight hosts. There are still

opportunities available to serve as evening hosts,

overnight hosts, and to prepare part of a meal.

We are in need of the following supplies:

      women’s deodorant, toothbrushes,  toothbrush

travel cases, individual boxes of cereal and

individual bags of chips.  Host Week is 11/4-11/11.

                 UMW  ANNUAL FALL MEETING

The United Methodist Women's Fall Annual Meeting has been scheduled for Monday, October 29 at 7 p.m.  We are delighted that the Rev. Patricia A. Clendenen will be presenting our program "Music and Mission."  Her program will discuss the "passion brought to mission work by our forebears and expressed in the hymns of then and now.”  There will be a dessert reception after the one hour program.

                             NEW ARRIVAL

Dave and Marty Rodgers are proud to announce the arrival of their grandson, Weston T., who was born October 21, 2007.  He is the son of Michael and Stephanie Rodgers of Yorkville, TN.  Weston was welcomed home by his big brothers, Seth and Nate.

                               FROM THE PASTOR

Last week we looked at the first of our General Rules, Do no harm.  This week we look at the second General Rule, Do good.  Once again in John Wesley’s own words from 1808 here is what he says about doing good.

It is expected of all who continue in these societies that they should continue to evidence their desire of salvation,

Secondly: By doing good; by being in every kind merciful after their power; as they have opportunity, doing good of every possible sort, and, as far as possible, to all men:

  • To their bodies, of the ability which God giveth, by giving food to the hungry, by clothing the naked, by visiting or helping them that are sick or in prison.
  • To their souls, by instructing, reproving, or exhorting all we have any intercourse with; trampling under foot that enthusiastic doctrine that “we are not to do good unless our hearts be free to it.”
  • By doing good, especially to them that are of the household of faith or groaning so to be; employing them preferably to others; buying one of another, helping each other in business, and so much the more because the world will love its own and them only.
  • By all possible diligence and frugality, that the gospel be not blamed.
  • By running with patience the race which is set before them, denying themselves, and taking up their cross daily; submitting to bear the reproach of Christ, to be as the filth and offscouring of the world; and looking that men should say all manner of evil of them falsely, for the Lord's sake.

Let’s not just be good, let’s do good.  See you in church.

                                             Mike
