             UNITED METHODIST WOMEN NOTES

The UMW Fall Rummage Sale will be this Saturday, Sept. 29, 7:30 a.m.  Set up will begin after WNL! on the 26th and continue on Thursday, the 27th  and Friday, the 28th from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.  We need folks (women and men) to help.  No experience is necessary as you will receive on-the-job training!  Volunteers are needed to assist with unloading the storage building on Wednesday evening, unpacking boxes and bags on Thursday and Friday, and help with the sale and clean up on Saturday.  Someone is also needed to help with the electronics and appliance section making sure everything is in working order.  And we could use someone to help organize the men’s clothing.  If you are able to help Thursday and/or Friday evenings, call Judy McKenzie, 368-2062.

Each year each unit is asked to bring a commodity to the District Annual Meeting.  Our commodity is 9" disposable plates.  Please begin bringing these in and placing them in the white plastic basket in the workroom next to Janice's office.  We hope to have an overflowing basket by Nov. 9.  Thank you for helping!

                4 WEEK Loving Well STUDY

Loving Well, a study by Beth Moore looks at various types of people - some easy to love, and some not so easy to love.  The 4 week study includes insightful truths as well as humor, all designed to help women embrace the biblical mandate to love and to develop skills for loving others.  This is more than a study but also a prayer journey. The study will be on Sundays from 5:00-6:00 pm beginning September 30. Pam Carpenter and Charla Sherbakoff will facilitate the study. For additional information call Pam [525-5871] or Charla [450-5078]. Contact Pam or the church office [588-6562] if you want to participate in the study.

                          OPEN HOUSE

Bishop Swanson and the staff of Holston Conference invite you to an Open House on Sunday afternoon, September 30, 2:00 – 5:00, at the new conference facility located at 217 S. Rankin Road, Alcoa, TN.  Sunday’s Open House will be hosted by our Conference United Methodist Women.  Open House will continue through the following week (October 1-5) from 2-5 p.m. daily except 2– 4 p.m. on Friday.  Anyone who cannot come on Sunday will feel free to drop by during the week of October 1 and tour the conference office.  Church groups who want to come during that week are welcome to do so.

                                 FROM THE PASTOR

I’ve had several people ask for a copy of what I read during my sermon yesterday from Robert Fulghum’s book “All I Really Need to Know I Learned In Kindergarten”.  So here it is.  See you in church next Sunday.

ALL I REALLY NEED TO KNOW I LEARNED IN

KINDERGARTEN  (a guide for Global Leadership)

All I really need to know about how to live and what to do and how to be I learned in kindergarten. Wisdom was not at the top of the graduate school mountain, but there in the sand pile at school.  These are the things I learned:

  • Share everything.
  • Play fair.
  • Don't hit people.
  • Put things back where you found them.
  • Clean up your own mess.
  • Don't take things that aren't yours.
  • Say you're sorry when you hurt somebody.
  • Wash your hands before you eat.
  • Flush.
  • Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you.
  • Live a balanced life - learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some.
  • Take a nap every afternoon.
  • When you go out in the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands and stick together.
  • Be aware of wonder. Remember the little seed in the Styrofoam cup: the roots go down and the plant goes up and nobody really knows how or why, but we are all like that.
  • Goldfish and hamsters and white mice and even the little seed in the Styrofoam cup - they all die. So do we.
  • And then remember the Dick-and-Jane books and the first word you learned - the biggest word of all - LOOK.

Everything you need to know is in there somewhere. The Golden Rule and love and basic sanitation. Ecology and politics and equality and sane living.

Take any one of those items and extrapolate it into sophisticated adult terms and apply it to your family life or your work or government or your world and it holds true and clear and firm. Think what a better world it would be if we all - the whole world - had cookies and milk at about 3 o'clock in the afternoon and then lay down with our blankies for a nap. Or if all governments had as a basic policy to always put things back where they found them and to clean up their own mess.

And it is still true, no matter how old you are, when you go out in the world, it is best to hold hands and stick together.

FAVORITE HYMN(S).  The General Board of Discipleship (GBOD) invites every United Methodist to participate in a survey of favorite and least favorite hymns. This survey allows you to click on up to ten of your favorites and ten of your least favorite hymns and songs from The United Methodist Hymnal and The Faith We Sing. There are also five demographic questions to help GBOD analyze the results. All responses are anonymous and confidential. This information will help GBOD in planning future resources in congregational singing. You may find it helpful to compose a list of your selections prior to completing the survey. To take the survey, go to www.gbod.org/favoritehymns.html.
