Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN)
What is IHN? IHN provides a way to temporarily house and provide assistance to families without homes in order to help them become self sufficient. Thirteen "host" congregations and 17 "support" congregations, numerous volunteers, a core staff, and local social service agencies work as a team to do what individuals alone cannot do.
--During the day, guests stay at the IHNGK Day Center, also known as the Harley House. The IHNGK Director manages the IHNGK program and has an office at the Harley House. During the day, the Director works intensively with our guest families as they seek childcare, housing, jobs, medical assistance, and other resources needed to become self sufficient. So far, approximately two thirds of families who have participated in the IHNGK program have found permanent housing.
--At night, families stay at one of the 13 host churches. Volunteers from host and support congregations prepare and serve meals, serve as evening or overnight hosts, help set up and take down guest accommodations, and help with laundry. Volunteers also organize activities, such as family game night, tutoring, arts and crafts, or outings. Special classes on nutrition and budgeting are sometimes provided in the evening for parents, and volunteers are needed for childcare during class times. --Each Sunday, families rotate to the next host congre-gation. --Guests are transported between host churches and our day center by the IHNGK van drivers in our large van. School-age children are transported to and from school through arrangements with Knox County School District. Where does BUMC fit in? We are a host church. The families live at our church for a week. Sacred Heart Cathedral is a support congregation for us.
Where do you fit in? Without you, BUMC cannot host the families and be apart of this ministry. You provide the meals, serve as overnight and evening hosts, help set up and take down the Sunday School rooms into bedrooms, wash sheets and towels, and play with the children.
When does BUMC host next? March 4-11
How do I get involved? Sign up on the IHN Service Opportunity Board in the Atrium or call Charla Sherbakoff at 450-5078.
But wait, why I do I want to get involved? To be Christ to people in need! To Love!

FROM THE PASTOR
Ash Wednesday and Lent! Next Wednesday, Feb. 21, is Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent. Hoyt Hickman, a United Methodist worship historian, says, “Ash Wednesday is a particular time for new beginnings in the faith, a time for putting aside the sins and failures of the past in the light of who we are yet to become by the Grace of God.” Lent is the season of preparation for Easter. It is the forty days, less the Sundays, leading up to this greatest of days. In worship literature Lent will often be referred to as the time for celebrating “The Paschal (Passover) Mystery.”
On Ash Wednesday we will worship with the service of the imposition of ashes as we have for the last several years. Then we will have a full experience of Holy Week services. They are projected to be:
6:15 p.m. – Service of Foot Washing
On Easter we will have our regular great celebration beginning with Sunrise.
Many people observe special spiritual disciplines as a way of observing Lent. Some fast, others may give up a favorite food or something they enjoy as a way of bringing focus to the season. For all it is a season of heightened prayer, bible, and worship.
May this be a season of great depth for you and yours this year.
In Christ, TLS
A BIG SUCCESS!!!
Thanks to everyone for making the spaghetti luncheon a big success. We raised over $1100 for the Costa Rica mission trip. A special “thank you” to the Mission Team for all the hard work, Kate Linsner for the beautiful and yummy cake, and to the best dishwasher in town, Jim McPherson. We look forward to seeing everyone at our next fund raiser!
--The Costa Rica Mission Team
CONGRATULATIONS to Haynes Smith who was recently honored by the West Knox Rotary Club for his continued and outstanding service. Haynes is the first recipient of this award.
CHURCH MUSIC: The Music Visioning Team has had two meetings to discuss the music ministry at Bearden. We would like to hear from you. Please take time to write down ideas, thoughts, and dreams about the future music ministry of the Bearden Church and drop them by the church office, or place in the offering plate during worship. Our next meeting is scheduled for Thurs., February 22 at 6:30 p.m. in the Conference Room.
