              THE LOVE LANGUAGES OF GOD

Beginning February 15; Facilitator:  Laughlin Smith

We feel most loved when others speak our primary love language.  We are drawn to those people because they are meeting our basic need to feel loved.  Dr. Gary Chapman examines how this concept relates to God’s agape love. Does God demonstrate His love for us mainly through acts of service, or words or affirmation, or gifts, or quality time?  The goal of this study is to expand your understanding of love for God and others. If you have questions or would like to look at the study guide, please see Donna.

                                  FROM THE PASTOR

A “Book of Daniel” Follow Up!  Just in case you missed the announcement, the television program “The Book of Daniel” got canceled a few days ago.  A TV program should know it has problems when even its controversial efforts are boring.

In Knoxville this program received one of its highest ratings. When you ask why, the answers come back in two categories.  The first is that the opposition bred a fair amount of curiosity.  People watched just see if it was “that” bad.  The second reason is that there is hostility in the community towards perceived “censorship” and quite frankly religious suspicion.

I received a couple of notes and an invitation to be on the radio for my perspective that was reported in a national religious publication.  That publication neither asked for my input nor notified me of their use of the statement.  That publication, at least locally did not ask for a review before the airing of the program.  To be very honest I found that lack of consideration by Christians nearly as much of a problem as the program.

Therefore, (always be wary of preachers who begin a statement with “therefore!”) I want to ask people to get as many facts as they can before making judgments.  As far as good programming is concerned, programs like “Joan of Arcadia” with a religious orientation have not received enough support to stay on the air.  I called the station and asked for a review.  When I told the manager it was “sorry programming,” he responded by saying there was no shortage of poor programs on the air.  “Daniel” was modeled after “Desperate Housewives!”  Have I gone too far?  How many of you have HBO and zealously watch “The Supranos?” (Or is it “Suprannos?”  I do not watch it so I can’t even spell it.)

One last word.  We have to find ways to touch the community positively.  If Christ is to be rejected or found suspicious, let it be because of people’s rejection of “The Good News” not because of our poor ethics, judgmental nature, or the negative practice of our faith.

                                            In Christ,

                                            Tom

                Bearden Game Night

Come join us on Friday, February 3 at 6 p.m. in the Fellowship Center for Bearden Game Night!  Everyone is invited to par-ticipate.  Chili and drinks will be provided.  You may bring a snack or dessert to share, a game to play or just yourself.  Bring a friend and have a fun evening!  We will conclude by 8:30.

A COLLEGE-AGE MINISTRY KICK-OFF LUNCH is scheduled for February 26th right after worship. We will be advertising to the local neighbors (especially in the apartment buildings on Sutherland Ave.) to come visit Bearden, have lunch and a time of fellowship. Help is needed!  We need: folks to hand out flyers in the neighborhoods, food preparers, food servers, and a clean up crew.  If you would like to help in any way with the college-age ministry, please call Michelle McClure 385-7953.

COMING SOON!  THE EARLY RISER CHOIR!!  If interested, meet on Sunday morning, Feb. 12th at 8:20 in the choir room to “make a joyful noise” at the 9 o’clock worship service!

                  POND GAP MENTORING PROGRAM

When I first heard about the mentoring program for Pond Gap School, I thought, “not me; they need younger people for this.”   Then I was told that they could use grandmothers as well as other ages; age didn’t matter.  So I decided to sign up.  On my first day as I sat in the school office waiting for my student – in she comes on crutches!  So with her crutches and my cane we had an instant bond.  Now I approach Thursdays, my day for mentoring, with anticipation, and discovered my little first grade student asks every day, “when will it be Thursday?”  What a blessing to have a child I have known just two months look forward to our time together as much as I do.  –Polly Mossman

(Special note:  Last week when I arrived at Pond Gap, Polly was leaving and her little girl was crying.  She just couldn’t understand why Polly couldn’t stay with her the rest of the day.  We are building relationships with children who need loving relationships.  If you would be interested in participating in this program, please give me a call at the church office, and we can make the appropriate arrangements.   – Miss Donna)
