                          IN APPRECIATION

A letter has been received from the Executive Director

of the Florence Crittenton Agency thanking the Bearden United Methodist Church congregation for its help in

making Christmas special for several of the Agency’s

clients.  BUMC is thanked for its $50 monetary contribu-

tion and for more than fifty gifts for mothers and babies.

If you shared in this giving, please accept this expressed

appreciation.

A HUGE “package” of thanks to Pastor Tom, Eric

Rodgers, Al & JoAnn Matz who served as Advent &

Christmas undecorators for our church.  Undecorating

is much less fun than decorating but surely as necessary.

These folk served long and well!  Thanks also to Dick

Kelso, serving as an IHN host, who stepped in with help.

MOBILE MEALS DAY.  January 25th is Mobile Meals

Day, all day, at area Shoney’s Restaurants (in coopera-

tion with the home-delivered meals program of the

Knoxville-Knox County CAC Office on Aging).  A portion

of the proceeds for the day will go to the frail and home-

bound seniors’ meal programs in this area.  Please dine

at Shoney’s to show support of this generous sponsor-

ship.

FROM THE PASTOR

Shall we gather?

I serve on the District Board of Ministry.  Among other things, this affords me the opportunity to hear some stories about churches and pastors that are on the other side of the street.  It is amazing what God is doing in places many of us would have given up.

One little church has a goal of reaching every unchurched person in their zip code area.  One church has so many kids during the week that they need a gym and they use every room in the church for Sunday School.  One church has gone from ready to close to over 40 in attendance.  On percentage these are staggering successes.  Wow God!

Then this weekend the youth will be attending the Resurrection 2006 retreat in Gatlinburg.  After the two weekends are held they expect nearly 12,000 youth to have attended.  Wow God!

In our own small corner I have been told of how God sent the right people to be present at IHN to meet very special needs.  We had nearly 50 volunteers last week at IHN touching lives of broken people.  Wow God!

                                         In Christ,

                                         Tom

                            IHN JANUARY WRAP UP

Several weeks before we hosted the Interfaith Hospitality Network this past week, I prayed that we will have enough workers for the week, God will work out the details for the week, and all of us who work with IHN will be filled with love, patience, self-control, and goodness.  I know several others also prayed before our host week. God never ceases to amaze me!  He not only provided us with enough workers but he placed each worker in their job at the right time and in the right place as the situation called for.  The blessing I received this week was seeing God's hand in this ministry.  It wasn't just God's hand but His whole arm embraced our IHN.  It was a difficult, challenging week.  Each worker was stretched to love more and to judge less.  We were able to love and serve because of our love for Christ. Thank you for serving and loving extraordinarily. To God be the glory!  Next Host Week - March 26-April 2.

FISH of Knox County began in 1971.  Bearden Church’s partici-

pation, requiring drawing groceries from a church in East Knoxville, began (as best we can determine) in 1983.  The late Bob Milford was our hard-working leader for 15 years, until declining health forced his retirement. We now operate, at six-month intervals, under these coordinators:  Sue Arnhart, Roger & Jo Frey, Nancy Mitchell, Charla Sherbakoff, Hoyt & Dot Steed, and Tom & Katherine Stooksbury.  We have leaders and deliverers, but we could serve more hungry people if we had more deliverers – just two hours or less every first-Wednesday- of–the-month.

Parenting Thought of the Week:  What are the video games your children play?  What are the lyrics of the music to which your child listens?  What websites are your children using?  As our children are inundated with media, it is our responsibility as parents to make ourselves aware of what is going into the minds and hearts of our children.  Romans 10:17 says that faith comes by hearing.  Hence, it is logical to think that if faith comes by hearing, then other characteristics can be cultivated by what we hear and see.       –Miss Donna
