What’s happening in Faithquest?  The Faithquest

Rotation Sunday School students are currently studying the anointing of David as the future king of Israel.  In this dramatic story, the Lord directs Samuel to reject Jesse’s

seven older sons, and to anoint the shepherd boy David as the eventual successor to King Saul.  The Bible pass- age is I Samuel 16:1-13.  The memory verse that several of the workshops emphasize is I Samuel 16:7, “Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”  Some of the workshops also include a few of the Psalms written by David when he was older.  Here are some questions that will be discussed with your children:

--What are some of the aspects of outward appearance

that are considered important in our society?  Physical

  characteristics?  Clothing?  Cars and homes?

--What are the qualities of a good leader?  In politics?

  In the church?

--Why do you think God chose David to become king?

--Why do you think God chose a young boy instead of a

mature adult to become the next king?

--Do you feel that God is preparing you to fill an important

  role someday?

K-4 Rotation will be in the Fellowship Center on Oct. 1.

                               FROM THE PASTOR

Communion of Saints, one more word!  After the service Sunday I was placing notes in the file and saw the words, “Set Apart For God.”  They sent me off to revisit of the idea of “The Communion Of The Saints,” and St. Paul’s words about Saints/Sanctified, and the Church.

We, that is the church, that is Bearden UMC, that is you and me, are set apart for God!  That term, “set apart,” does not mean lifted out of the reality of its location.  It means just the opposite.  We are “Set Apart” right in the middle of reality to be leaven.  The leavening process comes via word, deed, presence, and lifestyle.  We are very sensitive to being different and being acceptable.  This is a tough issue!  The goal is not to be “different” and say everyone to look at us.  The goal is to be different in Christ’s love to the point that they quality of life will cause people to look and ask what makes us tick.

I do covet for our congregation as a whole and as individuals a sense deep within our soul of being “Set Apart For God!”

                             OUTREACH MISSIONS

BEAREND UMC KATRINA MISSION TEAM - There will be a BUMC mission team heading to Mississippi the week of November 19th.  Is God calling you to be a part of this team?  Hurricane Katrina left thousands of people homeless and jobless without resources to recover.  Immediately after landfall, United Methodists began to respond with churches being used as distribution sites and shelters.  UMCOR began shipments of needed supplies and the Mississippi Conference began taking steps to create a long term response.  To date, thousands of volunteers have made trips to Mississippi, and more continue to come.  Many more are needed.  Bearden UMC mission team will work construction at an assigned location.  Lodging will be provided by an area church.  Skills that are needed include but not limited to are general carpentry skills, heating & air conditioning skills, electrical skills, plumbing skills, hanging and spackling drywall, roofing and metal sheeting.  Youth are welcome if they are 14 to 18 years old and are accompanied by adults.  So, how about Thanksgiving in Mississippi?  How about a Thanksgiving spent in reaching out and showing God's love? Please contact Charla Sherbakoff 450-5078 if you want to be a part of this mission team.

Thanks for the FISH workers!  The Youth delivered the bags from the pantry.  Joanne Hill and Joan Frey manned the phones for FISH calls.  Jack Mills and Hoyt Steed picked up the bread and returned unused bags.  Nancy Mitchell coordinated the deliveries.  Groceries were delivered by Tom Arnhart and Marion Alexander (11 deliveries!), Ed Anderson, Nancy Mitchell, Tom and Katherine Stooksbury, Roger Frey and Bob Pletz.  Sounds like another link in the chain of good works that form a chain of love.  The next delivery day is October 4th. We always need more deliverers.  How about it? Ask a FISH work about their job. Call the FISH coordinator for the month, Sue Arnhart 588-5045.

                    IHN SPAGHETTI COOK OFF RESULTS!

On September 26, at the quarterly IHN Coordinators' meeting, I accepted the IHN Spaghetti Cook Off People's Choice award (raised the most money!) on behalf of Bearden UMC and Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church.  A big thank you to the people of Sacred Heart who graciously stuffed the ballot with dollars! And, a big thanks to many of you who bought tickets and/or attended this event. We had three sponsors from our church - Karen Billingsley, the Shepherds of the Word/Backyard Burgers and Sherbakoff REALTORS. Leigh Cheek, Karen Billingsley, David and Natalie Broyles, Kate Linsner and a host of Sacred Heart friends worked the event.  At the Spaghetti Cook Off, 11 teams representing 28 congregations in the Knoxville area served their specialty spaghetti and over 450 people attended.  $17,000 was raised at this first annual event. The proceeds will help struggling families without homes stay together and receive the support they need to become self sufficient. Due to the success of the supper, IHN is planning to offer new budgeting, parenting, and nutrition classes to families in the program. Isn't it amazing what can be done when we forget our theological differences and come together in love and united in our faith? God can sure do wonderful things!
