               Children’s Ministry

Volunteers are needed to work on costumes and scenery for the children’s Christmas musicals: preschool mini-musical, “Angels and Lambs,” and the K-5th grade musical, “Angels Alert.”  Please contact Donna, 588-6562.

Pond Gap Mentoring will begin the first week of October.  Only 45 minutes per week.  If interested, call Donna, 588-6562.

There will be a meeting of parents of children K-5th grade on Sunday, Sept. 24 at 4:30 p.m. in the sanctuary.  Parents of preschoolers will meet on Sunday, Oct. 8th at 4:30 p.m. in the sanctuary.

Special recognition to Chris Cantor.  Chris and his brother Parker (sons of Tanya and Don Bailey) wanted to do something to help the children at Pond Gap School.  Therefore, Chris came up with the idea of having a neighborhood lemonade stand.  Chris brought a zip lock bag with $15.00 from his lemonade stand to donate to the Pond Gap school supply drive.  Wow!  Thanks to Chris and Parker for their servant spirit and proactive attitude in reaching out in Christian love.  Chris recognized a need and that he had the ability to make a difference.  So, this young man took charge and accomplished his goal. Didn't someone say "a child shall lead them"?

UMW – SCHOOL KITS FOR UMCOR.  Our conference mission project this year will be School Kits for UMCOR.  They will be taken to the Holston UMW Annual Meeting this month.  Each circle is asked to provide at least one kit and we would love to have many more.  The kit items are as follows:

1 pair blunt scissors (rounded tip)      1 30-centimeter ruler

1 hand held pencil sharpener             1 eraser, 2 ½”

6 unsharpened pencils w/erasers       1 box of 24 crayons

2 packs of 8 /12 x 11” ruled notebook paper

12 sheets construction paper

Please put your items in a 2 gallon plastic bag.  Each bag needs an envelope with $1 in cash or check (made out to UMCOR Sager Brown) taped to outside of the bag.  This is for shipping.  Include only those items on the list and nothing more.  You may leave your kits in the office with Janice by Friday, Sept. 15th.

                               FROM THE PASTOR

100%!  Can you get 100% of the Bearden congregation to do anything?  I don’t know but it is a good idea!  O.K. Tom, what are you talking about?  Oh my, I did not tell you, did I?

The 100% comes from our Evangelism team meeting last week.  The E-Team wanted us to start the Autumn with a commitment to see that everyone received a great Bearden welcome – member and non-member alike.  And, the dream is that every one of us accepts the honor of being the welcoming committee.

Some will say, “I don’t know everyone and will mistake member/non-member.”  Let us turn that around to say that might just be the case but you may be meeting your newest best friend!

100% greeters, a great goal!

                                          In Christ,

                                          TLS

FISHfact:  A message from Fran and Stan Love:  The West Knox FISH Pantry is full, and “thanks” are due.  Approximately $3200 worth of groceries (enough to provide about 600 full bags for delivery during September to 400 needy families across our city) were purchased and delivered to the pantry.  Three hundred sixty-eight bags (the pantry’s space limit) were filled on Sunday, Sept. 10th by 16 folks, mostly youth, and we would like to say, “thanks!” for their help in bagging.  The remaining cased groceries will be bagged later in the month.

Lastly, in keeping with Bearden’s recycling program, Stan’s big pickup truck’s bed was full of flattened corrugated boxes taken for recycling.

NEED A RIDE?  If you do not have transportation to a Sunday worship service, we do provide a van that can pick you up.  If interested, call Donnie Ernst, 584-9985.

CHILD CARE NEWS.  The Childcare Board would like to welcome Lisa Counts as the director of the School Age Program at Bearden!  Lisa worked with the After School Program and served as the Youth Director at Bearden in the 1990's; we are delighted to have her on board at Bearden once again!!  We would also like to welcome Christy Hanna and Brandon Galloway to the School Age staff!  They are an excellent addition to the child care ministry at our church.  In addition, we would like to congratulate Jenny Somerville on her one year anniversary as the Early Enrichment Program (BEEP) director.  Thanks to Jenny and her dedicated staff, BEEP has gone from a seedling to an oak...and it is getting better and better every day!   Great things are happening in our child care program.  Please join us in celebrating!

WHAT IS GAP?  GAP is the new Sunday School class for 5th graders.  GAP stands for God's Active Preteens.  Our new GAP class has adopted a class project and would like the assistance of the church.  Craig Wallace suggested that the class put baskets around the church to collect encouragement cards that can be sent to our troops in Iraq.  This is a wonderful idea and the rest of the class supported Craig's suggestion and wanted to adopt it as a project.  These children have decided to be proactive in their actions for Christ.  Therefore, beginning next Sunday there will be baskets at each entrance and in the atrium.  If you have cards at home, please write a note of encouragement to our troops and bring on Sunday and drop in the basket.  If you do not have cards at home, the children will have cards available for you to use to write your encouraging note and sign.  I'm excited about our GAP class and the 5th graders are anxious to see just how many cards they can come up with to send the troops.
