                UNITED METHODIST WOMEN NEWS

Science Camp.  Many thanks to our members who helped assemble lunches for Bearden’s June Arts Camp.  We are asking members to staff this task for the Science Camp July 24-28.  We start at 10 a.m. and it only takes about 1 hour if we have 4 volunteers per day.  We would love to have one person from each circle and one member at large daily.  If you are available, please call Nancy Cooper at 588-5470 or Donna Lewis at the church, 588-6562.

School of Christian Mission will be held at Kodak UMC,

2923 Bryan Road in Kodak July 27-29.  The opening session is Thursday, July 27 at 2 p.m. through the early evening.  Friday is all day with breaks for lunch and snacks.  Saturday’s session is approximately 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.  Bearden UMW will pay ½ of the $35 registration fee for any woman who would like to attend.  Participants can stay in Sevierville or Pigeon Forge at their own expense of commute daily.  (The exit is #207 at Sevierville off I-40).  If you would like to commute daily and need transportation or if you would like a registration form and more information, call Nancy Cooper at 588-5470.

Nominations.  We are accepting nominations for positions on the UMW Executive Committee.  If you have an interest in serving or would like to make a nomination, please call Ann Beaver at 558-8972.

Esther Circle will meet Tuesday, July 18th at 6 p.m. for dinner at Aubrey’s Restaurant on Northshore Drive.  (They didn’t meet last week due to VBS.)

                            HOLSTON HOME

The churches in the Holston Annual Conference have, for many years, supported the ministry of Holston United Methodist Home for Children by receiving a special FIFTH SUNDAY OFFERING.  This provides a simple, sure way to share in the responsibilities of providing care and compassion to children who look to the church at a time of crisis.  Your generous gift on July 30th will make a difference.  Thank you.

                 THE EARTHLY POWER OF FOUR

In 1921 Arthur W. Pink posed the question, “Why Four Gospels?”  In seeking the answer to his question he revealed these interesting properties of the number four:

  • “Four” is the number of the earth – the world.
  • There are four corners of the world or four points on the compass – north, south, east and west.
  • There are four seasons in the earth’s year – spring, summer, autumn and winter.
  • There are four elements connected with our world – earth, air, fire and water.
  • There have been four great world-empires – the Babylonian, the Medo-Persian, the Grecian and the Roman.
  • Scripture divides earth’s inhabitants into four classes – “tribe, language, people and nation” (Rev. 5:9).
  • In the “Parable of the Sower” (Matt. 13), seed is scattered onto four types of earth – path, rocky, thorny and good soil.  Later Jesus said, “the field is the world.”
  • The fourth commandment tells us to rest from all earth’s labors.
  • The fourth clause in the Lord’s Prayer is, “Thy will be done on earth.”
  • If four is the number of the earth, then it is quite fitting that there are four Gospels in which to set forth the earthly ministry of the Heavenly One.
