Retirement Reception.  The Rev. Charles Lockerby will be retiring from Holston Conference at their annual meeting at Lake Junaluska in June.  Charlie and his wife Shirley served Bearden from July 1, 1990 through June 30, 1993.  For those in our congregation who remember the Lockerbys, Central United Methodist Church in Radford, VA will be hosting a reception for and/or roast of the Lockerbys on June 3 at 7 p.m.  If you wish to attend, you are asked to RSVP to Bill Lacy, 1301”B” West Main St., Radford, VA  24141.  Directions can be supplied upon request.  If you cannot attend but wish to send greetings to Charlie and Shirley, you will have that opportunity, too.  Their children, Janet Lockerby-McCoig, David and John Lockerby, are compiling a memory book to be presented to their parents at the reception.  Their hope is for you to jot a note, share a memory, remember a story, wish them well in retirement, or send a photo.  Please turn in all items to Janice in the church office before May 22. If you have any questions, please contact Janet at 704-248-0019 or  mccoig@hotmail.com.  They ask that we please keep this project a secret because they hope to surprise their parents with this memory book.  They also extend to you their thanks for taking the time to participate and being a part of their parents’ memories.

SCHOOL KITS FOR ZIMBABWE - Will you help?

Maria Sabino Humbane is a missionary of the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church assigned to church and community ministries in Mutare, Zimbabwe.  She needs our help in providing school kits for the children. Yes, the students are far away yet we are called to help. Yes, we have needs in our own community yet we are called to help. Yes, we are helping with Pond Gap ministries, IHN, FISH, yet we are called to help.  Look for the Zimbabwe School Kit booth in the atrium and at Wednesday Night Live. $15 provides a kit. June 4 is the deadline for providing kits.

                                 FROM THE PASTOR

Graduation!

Congratulations to all of our graduates from high school, college, graduate school, and business schools!  Have I missed anyone?  The speaker at Tennessee Wesleyan this year told the graduates they had a world of gifts but that gifts alone do not make a person good.  I believe that when you add that word “good” to the conversation you also add words like “faith and values.”  In order to be a good person and in order to be “good for something” gifts, giftedness, and God-given charisma need to be given over to the higher values.  The man that makes $20,000 and is a loving father and neighbor is a lot more valuable in the Kingdom of God than the man who makes $500,000 and is a bum!

Hey!  I want all you guys and gals to make all the money you can, but without being a person of love you will be very poor indeed.  I want all of our grads. to be very successful.  But, more than that, I want them to be “Good” people.

Remember who you are, “CHILDREN OF GOD!”

                                     In Christ,

It’s a very important meeting as we

need to make a $70,000 decision.

                           FISH REPORT FOR MAY

Total Calls Received                                                             30

Number of Food Deliveries Made                                           29

Number of Food Requests Picked Up at Church                       1

Number of People Helped ( 58 adults, 60 children)                118

Number of Bearden UMC Volunteers ( 18 adults, 16 youth)     34

FISHfact:  Sorry – there isn’t a “fact” this month, other than the numbers representing Bearden’s effort and the people fed.  Since we’re responsible for FISH of Knox County only one day a month, and since it’s done by a relatively few number of people, this add-on to the numerical report was started in late 2004.  The goal was to help the congregation feel more connected to this local mission activity.  The 17 or so monthly FISHfacts have now covered all the subjects thought of at the start:  our participating, both monthly deliveries and yearly pantry-restocking; the County-wide picture; the mechanics; our history; and some of the long-time participants.  So now we ask, What would you like to know about FISH?  We spend several thousand dollars of your contributions every year.  Don’t you have a question?  Give it to Charla Sherbakoff, or we may have a pop quiz.  If questions (FISHfact subject) don’t materialize, it’s almost time to start publicizing the West Know Pantry restocking effort.  This space will be turned over to Fran and Stan Love, who have a very large time- and effort-consuming task, and they will need your help.

CONGRATULATIONS!  Oladapo and Funmi Obitayo announce the birth of their son, Toby, who was born Saturday, May 13, at St. Mary’s Women’s Pavilion.

INTERFAITH HOSPITALITY NETWORK NEEDS.  Through your generosity, several cars have been donated and given to IHN families.  They will tell you how important these vehicles are to them – they help them get to work, appointments, etc.  Each of these donors can now claim this donation on their taxes, so, in essence, both IHN families and donors are benefiting.  Most of us know how important transportation is to keeping a low-income family’s heads above water.  IHN is still in need of vehicles to give to families.  Please consider donating a working vehicle to IHN.  It can make a world of difference for a struggling family.           --Kelly Owen, Network Dir.
