                          FROM THE PASTOR

Mom’s Day!  This Sunday is Mother’s Day and this week is the celebration of National Family Week.  In the church we get very upset at many things that are perceived to be wrong lifestyles, mistreatment of our kids and some lesser things.  As we approach Mom’s Day, I want to make a pitch for our families looking inward at family dynamics, relationships, values, and our “God” relationship or lack thereof.  I want us to ask about our use of time!  What I mean by this question is “quality time” vs. “leftover” time.

Our nation is just too busy!  Our schedules are over-booked.  We spend inordinate amounts on recreation that begins to suspiciously look like stressful work.  How many conversations have you not had because the TV replaced your family dialogue?  How many family interactions have you missed because there is just too much to do in your family schedule?

Folks, the greatest thing you can do for yourself and your family is to take a few minutes in the morning, or the evening, or at the noontime and pause for a word from “The Word” and a season of Prayer.  Parallel to that is to involve your household and yourself in worship!  Out of these should be birthed your work schedule, your family schedule, your budget, your family relationships, your values, and a few thousand other things.

Hey!  Good advice; hug a lot (if you are single like me that can get you in a pickle), tell every member of the household you love them, and look into the mirror and say, “I am a child of God.”  Blessings,

                                          In Christ,

                                          TLS

2006 HOLSTON ANNUAL CONFERENCE MISSIONS

If you could only say one thing about Holston Conference, it would be that this Conference is very much involved in missions.  You could also say that about Bearden UMC.  There is always a need in the mission field.  The following efforts are being supported by the 2006 Holston Annual Conference and Bearden Church.  You may wish to participate in each project or one of your own choosing.  Let God lead you in your decision.

  1. The 2006 Holston Annual Conference mission offering will benefit “Embracing Our Extended Family Alaska Mission.”  This is an opportunity to support Holston’s Fran Lynch, a Church and Community Worker in Willow, Alaska.  The Conference goal is $100,000.  Bearden’s special offering will be collected May 28 and June 4; please make checks payable to the church and mark it “Alaska.”

  1. The Change for Children program is based on the belief that the pocket change of Christians can indeed change the world for children and their families.  Every child, youth and adult who enters the church is invited to donate his or her pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, or dollars into a designated collection container.  Half the money stays right here in Holston Conference and the other half is given to Hope for the Children of Africa.  These containers will be placed at our entrances on May 28 and June 4.

  1. Every year at Annual Conference the 12 districts collect items for distribution to various mission projects.  This year school kits will be sent to Liberia and Zimbabwe.  Churches in the Knoxville District have a goal to provide 400 school supply kits for Maria Humbane, a missionary in Zimbabwe.  Each kit should include the following:

3 folders (2-pockets)

1  12-pack pencils

2  12-packs of pens (blue or black ink)

1 box chalk

1 chalkboard eraser

1 pack wide-ruled notebook paper (150 ct.)

150 sheets of white copy paper (8 ½ x 11)

4 spiral notebooks (70 ct.)

Pack all items in a 2 gallon Zip-lock bag or secure plastic bag.

The bags must be filled with the exact items.  For example,

the 70 page spiral notebooks must be 70 pages and not 100 pages.  All bags must be 100% complete, too.

Note:  A $5.00 donation for packing and shipping is also needed.  Do not put money in bag!

You also have the option of donating $15 for a kit.  We have found a source that will sell us the supplies for that amount.  There will be a table in the atrium and one outside the sanctuary where you can leave your kits or place an order for one.

Come on folks, we need to rise to the challenge!  Pastor Tom spoke up at a recent Knoxville District Minister’s meeting and pledged that Bearden would supply 151 kits!  (He really did say that!)  But we can do it!

These kits need to be turned in by June 4th.
