                                NEW CLASS

We are reaching out to our young adults and developing a new Sunday School class for them.  This will be a class into which visiting young adults will easily fit.  To kick off our new class we are having a get together at the preacher’s house, and he has offered to cook for us!

Plan to join us on May 6th at 6:00 pm.  Call Michelle McClure for directions and/or more details, 385-7953.

SPRING RUMMAGE SALE

A RESOUNDING SUCCESS

Our spring rummage sale was wonderful in many ways.  We raised $ 3300.00 for missions,  we provided clothing and household items at low price to people from our area and others.  And we shared hard work and Christian fellowship making it all happen.  United Methodist Women wish to thank our wonderful co-chairs Judy McKenzie and Linda Millis for their dedication, hard work, and good cheer.  We also would like to thank everyone who came to help, all those who brought their rummage, and those who helped clean up (especially our Bearden youth!).  It truly "takes a village" and as always, our Bearden members responded. THANK YOU!

                              FROM THE PASTOR

I am writing this newsletter about a week before my trip to Sudan and Uganda.  You are reading it about the Thursday after.  I am already tired and hungry for Cracker Barrel or Backyard Burgers (I anticipate very well)!  Several have asked about the why and what of this trip.  Let me share just two things with you.

First, the Sudan Action Team of which I am a member began last September.  I came on board in November.  There is a great compassion in that group for civil war-torn Sudan and particularly the helpless children.  The superintendent of that area has expressed a desire for a church school in Yei, southern Sudan.  Our team will listen to the conference leadership, pastors, the laity, and observe the needs.  We will visit some current work in Uganda to evaluate if that work can become a model for Sudan.

The second reason for this trip is really the primary reason I am going.  My involvement comes from a deep sense of leading.  A lot of my heart is captured by missions.  I hope to be part of future work in Sudan by trip and/or becoming an advocate within the conference for this mission.  This whole episode has renewed my belief that the local church has a central need to be in mission both hands on and financially.

Please pray for me and the rest of our small team.  I promise when I get back to not tell you more than you ever wanted to hear or bore you mightily with Sudan anecdotes.  (I would not trust that particular promise!)    Blessings,

                                          In Christ,

                                          TLS

                            FISH REPORT FOR APRIL

Total calls received                                                              38

Number of food deliveries made                                            36

Number of food requests picked up at church                          2

Number of people helped (75 adults, 90 children)                  165

Number of Bearden UMC volunteers ( 20 adults, 16 youth)      36

FISHfact:  The parents of today’s youth probably remember the opening words of every Mission Impossible TV program.  Modified slightly, a similar disembodied voice might speak on Sunday once a month to at least 15 of Bearden UMYF:  “Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to travel in a church van, to a basement storeroom, there to select at least 70 paper sacks weighing up to 30 pounds, from five different locations, and place them in a loaned pickup truck.  The sacks must be exactly those specified, and must be handled so as not to tear them.  At the church, in the choir room, they must be placed again as you found them, in five different groups, with their identifying numbers showing.  This arduous task must be done Sunday evening, away from the observation of the congregation’s adults, who should be thanking you for the absolutely essential contribution you are making – without it, the Bearden FISH program could not operate.

I recognize that seven of your number will graduate this year, and the mission for those left behind will therefore become more difficult.  To all UMYF, especially the seven Seniors:  may your life be blessed for the mission you have accomplished.

This message will self-destruct with the publication of the next The Bearings.”
