FROM THE PASTOR Wednesday,
March 1st , is Ash Wednesday and begins the season of
Lent. Lent is the season of
preparation for
Easter. It is marked by
self-examination, repentance, and often prayer with fasting. At Bearden we
begin this season with a traditional service of imposition of ashes. The focus of this time is the invitation
to the altar for the placing of the sign of the cross on the brow with
ashes. In our sister congregations
that are more liturgical, this service is considered a “High Holy” experience
of worship. It is my
prayer that we will reclaim this experience in our congregation and make it a
priority. Last year we had a great
presence and worship service. I would
like to invite you to be a vital part of this celebration of the beginning of
Lent. Our service will begin at
approx. 6:35 p.m. Blessings, Tom CONGRATULATIONS to Shelby & Ashley Perry on the birth of Spencer Martin who was born Feb. 16th
. He was welcomed
home by big brother Christian. PANCAKES FOR COSTA RICA. Please join us for a Pancake Breakfast on Sat., February 25th

FISH REPORT FOR FEBRUARY Total Calls
Received 36 Number of
Food Deliveries Made 34 Number of
Food Requests Picked up at Church 2 Number of
People Helped (71 adults, 51 children) 122 Number of
Bearden UMC Volunteers (20 adults, 17 youth) 37 FISHfact: There is a
difference between NEEDS and WANTS.
Anyone who lived through the Great Depression knows, but print and
broadcast media wouldn’t have you discriminate. Without the trillion-dollar credit card debt and the WANTS that
produced it, the advertising industry, VISA, MASTERCARD, DISCOVER, banks, the
auto industry, and the American economy would ‘tank.’ We might have another Great Depression if
Congress adopted pay-as-you-go. You ask, What
does this economics preachment have to do with FISH? Answer:
This FISH act is a HELP NEEDED ad. (We’re always running HELP WANTED ads for deliverers,
but serving more hungry people is a WANT.)
The NEED is for a couple more ‘staff’ folks. The average age of ‘staff’ men is over 80, and they’re slowing
down. The ladies always top out at
39, of course. Hours:
8:30 a.m. sharp, every first Wednesday, until deliverers are dispatched
(usually by 1 p.m., preferably later). Salary:
Not even minimum wage, and must provide own lunch. However, free coffee, and free cookies if
a lady brings them. Advancement Opportunity: Limited. Experience: A lifetime interest in helping the less-fortunate would be a
plus. Other than that, read &
write. Insurance: You’ll feel good. Other
than that, you probably have Medicare. An Equal Opportunity Employer M/F. Apply to Charla Sherbakoff, Missions
Chair Job Descriptions: Telephone
Answerer (2): Using the universal
county-wide FISH line, talk with clients, most of
whom are really in need of food. Acquire personal and delivery information. Be polite and consoling. (May work an early or late shift.) Recorders
(2): Keep tabular record of clients,
or the tabular food- and deliverer-oriented
record. Perform quality check for adequacy of groceries before
deliverers arrive, and then assist them in correctly assembling
their various-size bags, bread, and ‘specials’; and loading in
vehicles.
Order-filler: Bag and label ‘specials’ (non-food items
such as soaps, toilet tissue and diapers) to be
delivered with groceries. Assemble ‘Pick Up’ bags, and release to clients who drive to the church. Help return unissued groceries to the West Knox Pantry. Mapper: Use that new-fangled computer gadget to
produce maps to help deliverers (requires
high-tech competence). Supervisor: In advance, contact and identify the staff
and deliverers available. On Wednesday, assemble the client delivery sheets in groups based on
geographical clusters, and assign to deliverers. Handle non-standard telephone situations. Establish telephone cut-off based on workload and available volunteers. (Sorry – all these twice-a-year positions are currently filled.) POND GAP
STEERING COMMITTEE will meet
Thursday, March 9 in the Pathfinders Class room. |

special thanks to Beth and Jerry Adam and Joe and Anne Thomas for their response
to the call for rotation workers.
Each parent was sent a card asking that they serve one rotation per
year (3 weeks) in the Faithquest Rotation K-5 grades. A stamped, return card was provided. If you have not had time to look at your
calendar, it would be especially helpful to our Rotation Coordinators (Nancy
Mitchell, Natalie Broyles & Linda Millis) if you could choose a rotation
and return the card as soon as possible.
Thanks! LENTEN
MOMENTS. Beginning
March 5 and continuing during the upcoming Lenten season, a few moments will
be taken during each worship service to reflect upon the crucifixion of
Jesus. Each ‘Lenten Moment’ will
involve one person reading selected scripture while a symbol of Christ’s
suffering is presented at the altar by a second person. A total of 24 people are needed to assist
with the reading and presenting of symbols over a period of 6 weeks. If you are interested in assisting with
this effort, please contact Les Beaver [558-8972] to have your name placed on
a volunteer sheet. UMW RUMMAGE SALE.
The
UMW spring rummage sale will be held on Sat., April 1 at 7:30 a.m. Set-up days are scheduled for Wed., March
29th at 7:30 p.m. and Thurs. and Fri., March 30th and
31st at 9 a.m. We learned from
the last sale that Knox Area Rescue Ministries are now limited to what
donations that can take. Please do
not bring any old, broken or heavily worn furniture, broken toys, old
computers or appliances that no longer work.
We don’t want to seem ungrateful, but these items do not sell and we
have to pay someone to haul them off.
